Koh Tao is a small island (only 21 km²!) off the East coast of Thailand. Literally, 'Koh' means island and 'Tao' means turtle - hence the name Turtle Island. The tropical islands in the Gulf of Thailand are well known for their idylic sandy beaches and relaxed way of life and Koh Tao is no different.
The main international airport in Thailand is Bangkok and this is where most people will find themselves at some stage or another. From Bangkok you have a number of options to get to Koh Tao. For the higher cost, but shorter travel time book yourself an internal flight between Bangkok and Samui (Koh Samui is a nearby island and short boat ride away). A cheaper option would be to get the overnight bus or train from Bangkok to Chumphon. From Chumphon the boat journey will take 2-3 hours. Once upon a time Koh Tao had very little in the way of ammenities. Those days are gone, paved roads now make it easy to get into Mae Haad or Sairee Town where you can find the Post Office, Banks/Cash Machines and Medical Facilities. For those who prefer the rugged way of life, a quad bike will allow you to explore those paths that have yet to be paved!
Koh Tao is originally famous for its diving opportunities. There are nearly 40 dive shops on the island and 30+ dive sites within close proximity, not to mention a beautiful reef right off the beach infront of Bow Thong. During your stay we will be happy to recommend reputable companies nearby that will take you on an adventure to see this underwater world! But diving is not the only thing we have on Koh Tao, we have rockclimbing, treking, bowling, minigolf and even trapeze! If you find yourself getting 'beached out' you'll definately be able to find another activity to keep you entertained on Koh Tao.
